EnquBio Launches NHBE Air-Liquid Interface (ALI) Airway Model
EnquBio is introducing its NHBE Air-Liquid Interface (ALI) Model — a physiologically relevant in vitro platform for respiratory disease research.
For drug developers working in respiratory indications, the challenge has always been the same: standard 2D cell culture doesn’t reflect human airway physiology. The ALI model closes that gap. By exposing normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells to air at the apical surface while feeding the basal layer with liquid medium, the culture differentiates into a mature, pseudostratified mucociliary epithelium — the architecture of the in vivo airway.
Key advantages
- Superior physiological relevance vs. conventional 2D culture
- Validated mucus-producing goblet cells (MUC5AC+) and ciliated cells (Acetyl-α-tubulin+)
- Stable in vitro for up to 2 months
- Validated Th2 cytokine stimulation data (IL-4/IL-13) for asthma modeling
Disease applications we support
- Asthma & allergic airway disease
- COPD
- Cystic fibrosis
- Respiratory infections
- Drug delivery & inhalation toxicology
- Inflammatory mechanism studies
